More Than A Few 03:23 11. Dreamstate 03:57 Release Notes: San Francisco's AM Magic is known for its charmingly off-center brand of melodic indie rock. One might not expect such heartfelt, accomplished music from a band whose members include a pro-skater and a guy named the Bassturd--AM Magic will surprise you. With eight years behind San Francisco's AM Magic, the band has generated an imaginative and sturdy style of melodic indie rock--a sound that now bears the hazy brightness of hard-fought confidence. Songwriting is split between Karma Tsocheff and Mike Alexis, with images of distant boats, red-eye flights, Barcelona, and uncertainty cropping up within their shimmery guitars and Doug Saenz's muted trumpets and jazz-inflected beats. Years ago AM Magic began a slow education. In the winter of '96, Karma and Doug would drive from San Francisco to Santa Cruz so they could play guitar and drums at the Consolidated Skateboards warehouse. A short while later Karma and Mike ended up roommates in a dank basement apartment. Both had guitars but could hardly play. Undaunted and inspired by the irreverent, lo-fi majesty of bands like the Silver Jews and the Grifters, they decided to start a band. After an erratic and brief first try with friend Ethan Fowler as Six Degree Theory, Karma and Mike inevitably asked Doug to join them. They re-named the band AM Magic and were shortly joined by friend and fellow skateboarder Nik Freitas on bass and rhodes. 4-tracking and trips up and down the coast kept them busy. After a few years, Nik left to pursue music on his own and has since recorded two exceptional albums on Future Farmer Records. Karma travels the world as professional skateboarder and Doug (an ex-pro skater himself) is usually right there with him. Mike, in the meantime, plays bass in the modestly powerful indie rock band the Decoration. 2005 finds AM Magic in a whirlwind of activity and with an accomplished debut record, Floats, to fuel the proceedings. The very talented Doug Poore joined the AM Magic fold recently as the band's permanent bass player and old friend the Bassturd joins the band live on keyboards and generously played on the band's new record.
