My mind's racin' faster than the cars on the road

…And then the pedal-steel floats in, mixing with the
acoustic guitar and the lonesome,
emotionally-drained vocals. So begins Backyard Tire
Fire's exceptional new release, Bar Room Semantics
(2005). Stories of hard work and hard luck, long
nights, dirty deeds, family, youth, and good ole
boys are crafted in a timeless manner as band leader
Ed Anderson (vocals, guitar, keys, harmonica) comes
into his own as an American songwriter.

"I think that you have to have lived a bit - at
least in my case and with my writing - I had to
experience some things to get to where I'm at, to be
able to present it and have it feel genuine to other
people." What Ed's talking about are things like
life and death, too much of too many things, being
broke, broken dreams, and the need to keep pushing.

It's ideas like this - the notion that life will
often stack up against you, but with a little faith
and a lot of work we can and will persevere - that
permeate the songwriting of Backyard Tire Fire. The
band's ability to write honest, soulful rock songs
for the everyman has created a foundation for bigger
audiences and radio potential. The music is often
pulled from personal affairs, and persevering is
exactly what Ed Anderson has been doing for more
than a decade in the music business.

After dismantling his popular Chicago-based rock
band Brother Jed (1995 to 2000), Ed linked up with
Tim Kramp (drums) to form Backyard Tire Fire. In
2001 the band began to perform regularly in
Asheville, NC, eventually moving closer to the
source and getting in touch with their rock roots in
Athens, GA. While eking out a living and honing
their craft, the band put out Live at the Georgia
Theatre in 2002 before coming full-circle, landing
back in Illinois where they enlisted Ed’s brother
Matt Anderson to play bass and help put together
their 2003 studio debut Backyard Tire Fire.

Having already built a loyal American and European
fan-base through moving songs, local radio,
relentless touring, and heated, balls-out rock
shows, it's the arrival of Bar Room Semantics that
finds a band on the verge of something bigger.
Walking in the same field as bands like MOFRO and
the Drive-By Truckers, Backyard Tire Fire is able to
cut to the core of the human experience, exposing
the truths that unite us all and uncovering the
beauty of the struggle.
