For three years, Smith wrote, recorded, and produced his first full-length album. This debut, titled Dead Letters, is a dark art-country album featuring Smith's grainy baritone voice and several fine Austin and Carolina musicians. Smith's musical influences have included Richard Buckner, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Jay Farrar, and Gillian Welch/DavidRawlings. Dead Letters, as a result, was released in July 2005 using the Nick Drake-influenced pseudonym, Sunshone Still*, and ranges from the smart story songs of "I Found Jesus" to the alt-country sounds of "Roan Mountain" and evokes a mix of wit, misfortunes, and musings in the storytelling. In 2005, Smith received an honorable mention at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival's Troubador Competition. He has also been selected to appear on Shut Eye Records' compilation disc, The United State of Americana, Vol 3. Previous artists appearing on Shut Eye compilations include Jay Farrar and Rich Robinson (BlackCrowes). *"And I was green, greener than the hill Where flowers grew and the sun shone still Now I'm darker than the deepest sea Just hand me down, give me a place to be" -from Nick Drake's Place to Be
