 Note:  Remember speed has everything to do with chess ratings.  This program
        is the strongest pc program to date.  Here are the ratings according 
        to the computer chess reports:
        
                                                   SOCRATES
                            is not released-- EA bought this engine to use in 
                            an upcoming chess release endorsed by Kasparov,    
                            but TITAN, another chess engine by the same author
                            demolished top mainframe programs and EA is after
                            that one instead... it may take out chess genius
                            when it is finished... GRANDMASTER CHESS is Zarkov
 1.  CHESS GENIUS   2495    but due to the graphics, it is slower and slightly
 2.  MCHESS PRO     2460    weaker... but a quality chess engine none the less.
 3.  SOCRATES       2420    I have heard people getting satisfactory results 
 4.  MCHESS         2400    with SARGON V (probably next on the list) but I 
 5.  FRITZ II       2360    haven't tested the update yet, and the one I have
 6.  ZARKOV 2.61    2310    (the first release) is rather poor.  FRITZ II is
                            the 2nd version of FRITZ which is called KNIGHT-
                            STALKER in this country, and hooks up to chessbase.
                            Also note that ZARKOV 3.0 will be out soon, no 
                            idea how strong just yet... though that 2495 
                            mark by CHESS genius probably won't be beat for a 
                            long time.  Poor REXCHESS, once supreme ruler, now
                            not even in the top six... though SOCRATES AND
                            TITAN are written by the same author, and we shall
                            see that EA chess game before the end of the year.

                   It is pretty easy to figure out, except for a few options.
 
 RANDOM:           Will select at random moves with nearly identical scores.  
                   Creates more variety, but subtracts game strength a bit...
 
 PERMANENT BRAIN:  Thinking on your time (you must enable extra search from
                   the display menu to see this)
 
 HASH TABLES:      KEEP ON-- program is weaker without them...
 
 PAWN STRUCTURE:   If on, computer plays according to pawn structure (most
                   likely that will make it stronger)
 
 TIME ADJUST...:   + or - will add or subtract 30 seconds (for tournaments)
 
 
 OTHER OPTIONS

 BOOK:  Tournament, random, or book off.  Random will select from a wide
        repertoire of opening moves.  Tournament will select only those that
        are suitable to computer's style.

 BOOK STYLE:  Normal:  Wide choice.  
              Human:   Openings designed to give program advantage against
                       humans
              Gambit:  Gambit lines
              Modern:  Modern like the Pirc and Alekhine
              Classic: Like e4 e5
              Blitz:   Sharp opening lines designed to give program advantage
                       against human players in blitz

PLAY STYLE:   ACTIVE is the strongest.

SELECTED DEPTH:  Normally the program does up to 12 ply of selected searching
                 above the full width depth.  This can be reduced to 10, 8,
                 6, 4, 2, or zero.  12 is strongest.

PIECE VALUE:     The value that the program gives to each piece can be 
                 adjusted from 75% to 125% of its normal value.

CONTEMPT:        If set negative, program plays for a draw.  Positive, plays 
                 to avoid draws.  +0.25 pawn words well when playing weaker
                 opponents.

OPERATOR TIME:   The time selected is added to program's clock each time the
                 program makes a move.  Useful for tournaments, where game
                 is played on real chess set and it takes time to transfer 
                 the move between real board and the program.  20 seconds may
                 be suitable.

W TIME:          White's clock can be adjusted...

B TIME:          Black's clock can be adjusted...


Cracking Notes:

   You must use PKUNZIP -D option otherwise the program will not work.  Unzip
it to a directory and then it's ready to run.
