Close Your Eyes 1:55 Release Notes: Tommy Roberts (vocals + guitar) and Simon Reynolds (guitar) both worked in Liverpool's Cranes Music Store, where they wasted their days playing, talking, thinking and selling music, mostly to their friends and other Liverpool notables. The kindly manager allowed the friends to rehearse in the basement of the store along with drummer Steve Keast. The addition of Matt McPartlan (bass) and Helen Turner (vocals and organ) completed the line-up in June 2000. Upon realising they didn't have a name and a looming debut gig at the Hanover pub, Tommy suggested they name themselves cranebuilders after the place they held so closely to their hearts. After the music store went into liquidation, the group isolated themselves in a north Liverpool terrace house and began working up songs. The resulting demos leading to various gigs in the north of England and Glasgow. The demos filtered out into the hands of local music dignitaries and began to generate interest. An e-mail from London based Earworm records and the offer to do a 7" single, resulted in the group believing that maybe they could eventually get out of the north Liverpool terrace! Meanwhile the demo was working wonders amongst A+R types up and down the country, which enabled cranebuilders to release an EP on their own label, ten people tell, grabbing the attention of John Peel and Steve Lamacq to name but a few. Enjoy.
