Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips have been constructing Frenchified frosted sparkling pop gems since the release of their 2003 ep L'Avventura and making music since before the breakup of Luna in 2003--of which both were members. At times, Back Numbers reminds me of the unnderrated and nearly forgotton PJ Harvey/John Parrish dance hal at louse point released in 1996, and at times it's reminiscent of the Serge Gainsbourg-written Bonnie & Clyde or Dusty Springfield or Nancy Sinatra or ... a Barbarella-esque Jane Fonda floating in her plastic bubble starship with a natty striped cape, glittered tights, and a ray gun. So much music is coming out now from couples who do moody Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf-laden lyrics over emo-pouty music and some may blow off Dean and Britta for just that reason. But unlike those other acts, Dean & Britta's bouncy, string-syrupy chords work beyond the lyrics and could stand alone on Back Numbers. Fans of Galaxie 500 (of which I was/am a huge fan), will recognize the simple watery guitar and the soothing overspeak of the Phillips-Wareham juicy coupling. I cannot stop listening to this CD, especially on sunny days when I need to supersize the good vibes in the universe.
