Matt approached Byron in regards to putting a group together. At the time, Matt was a member of Proudentall, a regionally admired band that had yet to prove itself outside of the local scene. Byron, a local legend (playing bass in the monumental Giants Chair out of KC), having collaborated with Matt previously on small side projects, agreed to the proposition. Matt's plan was to put a group together as quickly as possible and tour the West Coast. In all actuality, Matt had already booked the tour. He had 4-tracked 8 or 9 songs and booked a 3 week stint without a band. Enter Wes. One drunken evening at the Bottleneck, Matt approached Wes with an offer consisting of nothing more than, "You play drums, right?". Wes, who had played drums for a ska band, a pop-punk band, and various other incarnations looming around Lawrence, agreed to that simple proposition. A week later, the trio was in the basement hammering out the demos Matt had recorded. The plan was to go on tour in Matt's '91 Accord with a bass amp, guitar amp, bass drum, snare, and hi-hat. This idea was quickly abolished. The sound was becoming too huge and needed assistance. Enter Jamie. A transplanted axe maestro from Chi-town who played in the dramatic emo, shoe gazer group Nymb. Slinging coffee at the Bourgeois Pig in Lawrence, Wes had ran in to Jamie a few times, the former assuming the later was gay and flirting with him. Matt asked Jamie to contribute some of his sonic algorithms to the trio, and a quartet was founded. Soon after, the four left for the West Coast for a three week journey. Byron purchasing a mini-van, Wes dealing with a broken leg, Jamie coming to terms with a new group, and Matt loving every minute of it. Before venturing to the West Coast, Doris recorded a home demo with said members around April, 2002, with a hip-hop guy who had an 18-track digital recorder. Mike was asked to contribute to the recording (as a side note, Mike and Wes played together in the above mentioned ska band, and Matt and Mike shared their first band experience in a group named Kyle). It became obvious that Mike would need to be a permanent member of the group. Mike, a musical genius as well as an amazing person to mock mainstream culture with, was warmly welcomed as part of Doris Henson. Doris Henson recorded their first full fledged album with Duane Trower at Westside Studios in KC, KS in March of 2003. Duane, a rock god and engineering merlin, was an easy choice (as well as a great friend). This recording was released on Pacific Rock Records, a new start up label run by Bob Reich, originally an aquantaince of Matt, but received with open arms by the rest of the group. Another tour ensued... Upon their return, in May 2004, Doris Henson had 10 songs ready to be recorded...and by the end of the recording process, 12 songs had been conceived. John Hulston of Anodyne Records (KC,MO) was there to supply the support. The recording process was something new and different. More freedom and room for experimenting, while keeping the initial vibe of Doris Henson. Once the recording was completed, a telegram from up East came a calling. Kim C. of DeSoto was interested in putting out the album. Once the details had been settled, Doris was on DeSoto. And chaps, here we are. To date, Doris Henson is constantly writing and looking forward to recording the next album. But please take a moment to look at what we have to offer up to this point. Please check out the audio links on this site as well as on DeSoto Records. Check back to see where we will be playing next...hopefully a location near you.
