Taking the place of such younger acts as the Helen Stellar band, Wheat and eastmountainsouth from the first collection are Kathleen Edwards, Pinback, the Concretes and Rachael Yamagata on the follow-up. The earlier volume also had The Hombres’ "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)" from 1967 and Elton John’s 1970 "My Father’s Gun" as nods to the past; this time Crowe goes all the way back to the 1920s for "What Are They Doing in Heaven Today" by the bluesman Washington Phillips. In two cases, Vol. 2 offers versions of songs by different artists than those that appeared on the original release. Judee Sill’s "Jesus Was a Crossmaker," done by the Hollies on the first soundtrack, is sung by Rachael Yamagata this time, and the Wilson-Crowe composition "Same in Any Language," performed by I Nine on Vol. 1, is handled by My Morning Jacket on Vol. 2.
