Stranger Than Fiction -- the upcoming film starring Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, and Emma Thompson -- has a soundtrack that just might be this year's answer to Garden State's accompanying album. Maximo Park, Delta 5, Califone, Vangelis, the Jam, M83, and others contribute songs to soundtrack, and Spoon wrote a brand new tune for it entitled "The Book I Write," a concise and well-crafted jaunt through groove-laden indie-rock territory. The soundtrack also features staples from Spoon's catalog, including Kill The Moonlight's "Vittorio E" and "The Way We Get By," as well as Gimme Fiction's "My Mathematical Mind." Why so much Spoon action on the album? "I thought it might be the perfect occasion for Britt Daniel (singer/songwriter of Spoon) and I to collaborate," soundtrack producer Brian Reitzell (who has worked on the albums accompanying Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation, Virgin Suicides, and Thumbsucker) writes in the liner notes to the album. "I was basically scoring the film with Spoon songs -- it created a kind of sonic thread that had just the right amount of nervy melody and rich, simplistic tone." And Reitzell didn't stop at just using Spoon songs for the soundtrack, as the producer also tapped frontman Britt Daniel to co-compose the film's score. Stranger Than Fiction hits theaters nationwide Nov. 10 and the soundtrack drops Nov. 7.
